Magazzino Italian Art Foundation Opens to the Public Virtually

As we collectively navigate these uncharted times, we are finding more reason than ever to foster connection with one another. Community and collaboration is at the heart of what we do here at Magazzino. While our galleries are closed, we want to use this moment of dislocation as an opportunity to bring people together through our shared interest and love for Italian art. Over the coming weeks, we will release new digitally formatted programs, highlighting uplifting, inspirational artworks and members of our creative community. 

Channeling the powerful energy of collaboration, we will launch this series with unpublished documentation of Marinella Senatore and The School of Narrative Dance (November 2019). Made possible through joint efforts of Cold Spring residents, this project exemplifies Magazzino’s commitment to provide a platform for people and creativity across generations, cultures, and passions. We will premiere this film on Friday, March 27, 2020 on IGTV and at magazzino.com/magazzinodacasa and will present an interactive Q+A with artist Marinella Senatore and curator Ylinka Barotto on Instagram Live on Saturday, March 28, 2020.

Homemade
In an effort to support artistic community and production during this period of uncertainty, Magazzino Italian Art Foundation will launch Homemade, a new initiative that invites contemporary Italian artists living in New York to create new works of art from their home. This project offers artists, who come from regions across Italy, the opportunity to connect with one another and experiment with new artistic forms. As we all across the globe cultivate a new appreciation for our domestic lives, the participating artists will utilize materials available in their homes to create works on an intimate scale. We will broadcast progress updates of the works directly over Instagram and ultimately the final products, both digitally and in person (when possible). Participating artists include Alessandro Teoldi, Andrea Mastrovito, Beatrice Scaccia, Danilo Correale, Davide Balliano, Francesco Simeti, Luisa Rabbia, and Maria Domenica Rapicavoli.

Salt and Copper: Stratified Questions and Replies from an Interview with Jannis Kounellis

Chris Bennett explores Jannis Kounellis’ production through a transnational lens. Based on an interview with the artist conducted in New York City in 2013, the lecture focuses on four insights generated by the discussion, ranging from Kounellis’ self-described “discovery” of an ongoing global “logic” for his work, to his global and conceptual enactment of artwork as perpetually “unfinished.”

Melissa McGill: Red Regatta

Premiere of extended film on McGill’s public art project Red Regatta, which activated Venice’s lagoon and canals with large-scale regattas of traditional vela al terzo sailboats hoisted with hand-painted red sails from May–September 2019. The screening will be followed by an artist led Q+A on Instagram Live on the project’s one year anniversary. 

Installing Magazzino

Presentation of a short movie, edited by Domenico Palma, of a behind the scenes look at installing Magazzino’s first exhibition, Margherita Stein: Rebel With A Cause. This screening will be followed by a live Q+A with the museum’s Collection Manager and Chief Registrar Gabriella Perez and lead art handler and Head Preparator and Facilities Manager Thomas Huber, who led the effort.

Murano Glass
Film release on May 20, 2020

This series will overview the Olnick Spanu glass collection. Starting with a presentation of Murano Glass: Olnick Spanu Collection, a film by Anton Giulio and Siretta Onofri. The film overviews the Murano glass tradition with footage of glass production in the storied factories of Venice and interviews with Nancy Olnick, Giorgio Spanu, and Ferruccio Franzoia, who collaborated with Carlo Scarpa. This screening will be accompanied by images of rare works in the Olnick Spanu collection and a Q&A on Instagram Live with Co-founders Nancy Olnick and Giorgio Spanu.

Olnick Spanu Art Program
We will return to the roots of Magazzino Italian Art Foundation with a survey of The Olnick Spanu Art Program. Comprising 10 commissioned site-specific artworks created between 2005-2015 on the grounds of Nancy Olnick and Giorgio Spanu’s residence, designed by architect Alberto Campo Baeza, this series will acquaint audiences with the artists who took part in the program. Each of these installations responds and harmonizes with the natural details of the surrounding Hudson River Valley environment.

Magazzino + Casa Italiana 
Building on Magazzino’s ongoing collaboration with Casa Italiana, we will jointly present new content based on past exhibitions with artists Ornaghi & Prestinari, Alessandro Piangiamore, and Renato Leotta. This series will be accompanied by artist Q+As and new documentation of their projects at Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimò.

Collectors Homes
Focusing on the home interiors and personal collections of notable art collectors, we will present a photo series of art collections in situ - starting with Nancy Olnick and Giorgio Spanu’s residence.
