It is with great sadness that we mourn the passing of Antonio Tucci Russo (1944–2023), a visionary gallerist who made significant contributions to the Italian contemporary art scene. Tucci Russo, born in Carema (Turin), began his career in art as the Director of Gian Enzo Sperone Gallery from 1968 to 1974. He then went on to open his own gallery in Turin in 1975, dedicating himself to promoting the Arte Povera movement and its artists.

During his 50 year career, Tucci Russo curated numerous exhibitions that showcased the work of both emerging and established artists, including Mario Airò, Giovanni Anselmo, Pier Paolo Calzolari, Mario Merz, Marisa Merz, Paolo Mussat Sartor, Giulio Paolini, and Giuseppe Penone. His site-specific exhibitions often explored the social and political implications of the Arte Povera movement, generating thoughtful discussion and raising awareness of critical issues.

In 1994, Tucci Russo moved his gallery to an old textile factory in Torre Pellice, where he continued to promote contemporary art until his passing. He also opened a new gallery branch in Turin in 2017, further expanding his reach and impact in the art world.

The team at Magazzino Italian Art extends our heartfelt and deepest condolences to his wife Elisabetta “Lisa” Di Grazia, and loved ones. Antonio Tucci Russo's contributions to the contemporary art world were invaluable and he will be sorely missed. His legacy as a gallerist and champion of the Arte Povera movement will undoubtedly continue to influence and inspire artists and art lovers alike for years to come. We are proud to share in his legacy; his advocacy and support of Arte Povera artists will continue to live on at Magazzino Italian Art through some of the works currently on view at the museum.
