April 25, 2024
Magazzino Italian Art Co-Founders Cav. Nancy Olnick and Cav. Giorgio Spanu, the members of the Advisory Board, Filippo Fossati Director, Chef Luca Galli of Cafè Silvia and the whole Team at Magazzino Italian Art Museum, offer their heartfelt condolences in remembering of master artist and a dear friend of Magazzino, David Provan, husband of Anne Provan, who leaved behind a legacy that transcends time.
David's journey through life was as multifaceted as his artistic creations. Following his graduation from high school in California, he embarked on a path of service, joining the Navy and bravely serving as an airborne reconnaissance operator during the Vietnam War. His experiences in Asia profoundly influenced his perspective, leading him to explore Buddhism and reside at the Yang Leshd Monastery in Nepal.
Upon his return to the West, David pursued his passion for art and architecture, earning degrees from Yale and the Royal College of Art in London. His profound understanding of Eastern philosophy and his keen artistic sensibilities converged in his sculptures, which often served as modern interpretations of Buddhist and Taoist ideals. His abstract works, resonating with cosmic symbolism, invited viewers to contemplate the mysteries of existence and the interconnectedness of all things.
David's artistic brilliance garnered international recognition, with his sculptures exhibited in prestigious museums worldwide, including the Fitchburg Art Museum in Massachusetts and the Seoul Metropolitan Museum of Art in South Korea. He also left his mark on public spaces through innovative projects, such as the mesmerizing kinetic sculptures adorning the New York City subway and groundbreaking historical markers for the Municipal Art Society.
Beyond his artistic achievements, David's profound insights into the nature of reality and the human experience echoed in his own words: "Through my studies and ultimately through my art, I’ve tried to construct objects that model and resonate with that world that lies just beyond our understanding."
As we bid farewell to David Provan, we remember not only his artistic genius but also his unwavering spirit and profound contributions to our collective consciousness.
We extend our deepest condolences to Anne Provan, his family, friends, and all who were touched by his extraordinary life. His departure leaves an irreplaceable void and he will be dearly missed at Magazzino.
Floreat semper vel invita morte.
