It is with great sadness that we mourn the passing of Giovanni Anselmo (1934–2023), a visionary artist whose creative spirit transcended boundaries and reshaped artistic expression.

Giovanni Anselmo, one of the original members of the Arte Povera movement, focused his artistic practice on the exploration of the physical properties of matter: gravity, oscillation, tension, inertia, equilibrium, weight, and movement. His works investigate the processes of physical transformation, creating situations of energy that unfold in time. His interest in language, exemplified by the projection of words such as infinito (infinite), particolare (detail), and tutto (whole/everything), is understood as an aesthetic element and autonomous symbol.

Emerging onto the art scene in 1968 with his inaugural solo exhibition at the Galleria Gian Enzo Sperone in Turin, Anselmo swiftly captivated audiences worldwide. His groundbreaking vision found resonance in numerous international exhibitions, each showcasing the brilliance and innovation that defined his oeuvre.

The team at Magazzino Italian Art extends our heartfelt and deepest condolences to his loved ones. His departure leaves an irreplaceable void in the art world, yet his legacy remains an enduring beacon. His profound influence will continue to shape the artistic conscience, guiding and inspiring future generations. Giovanni Anselmo’s artistry transcended time, and his legacy will live on at Magazzino Italian Art, a testament to his unparalleled vision and unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of artistic expression.
