Remembering Jan Shrem (1930–2024)
October 31, 2024
With deep sadness, we remember and honor Jan Shrem, an extraordinary figure in the world of philanthropy and art, who passed away this past September at the age of 94.
Born in Colombia to Jewish-Lebanese parents, Jan’s life journey took him across the globe, leaving a lasting impact on the art world and beyond. His remarkable career, which began with a successful publishing enterprise in Japan, culminated in the founding of Clos Pegase Winery in Napa Valley, a visionary fusion of wine and art designed by architect Michael Graves.
Together with his wife, international arts patron Maria Manetti Shrem, Jan left an indelible mark on cultural, educational, and scientific institutions worldwide, supporting over 55 charitable programs spanning the U.S., Europe, Africa, and beyond. Their commitment to philanthropy brought to life projects of unparalleled excellence, from the UC Davis Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art to the Great Singers Fund at the MET Opera, from the construction of schools to the establishment of neurology and cardiology fellowship programs at major medical institutions. Their philanthropy has elevated the creative, intellectual, and professional pursuits of countless individuals, and touched the lives of countless more.
Jan was a fine art connoisseur gifted with a radiant spirit and a compassionate heart. His joyful energy and passion will be remembered fondly by all of us at Magazzino Italian Art and the broader international art community. His presence, generosity, and impact in the fields of art, education, scientific and medical research will be felt for generations to come. His life serves as an inspiration—a reminder of the profound difference one person can make when guided by love, vision, and an unwavering commitment to the betterment of humanity through art and culture.
