Remembering Mario Gregorio (1951-2024)
December 18, 2024
With deep sorrow we remember Mario Gregorio, a cherished member of our Cold Spring community and an extraordinary craftsman, who passed away leaving a legacy of devotion, artistry, and resilience.
Born in 1951 in Sassinoro, in the province of Benevento, Mario embarked on a remarkable journey to the United States at the age of 17. Crossing the Atlantic by boat in 1968, he met Maria Conte, who would become his lifelong partner and wife. Together, they built a beautiful family, raising two children, Chris and Steve, and later celebrating the joy of their grandchildren, Eva and Mario.
Mario was a cornerstone of his community, both figuratively and literally. As the founder of a successful construction company, he earned widespread admiration for his skill in crafting magnificent stone walls. His work graces Philipstown and serves as a testament to his enduring legacy. Among his masterpieces is a Labyrinth inspired by the one at Chartres Cathedral in France, a poignant symbol of faith and perseverance. This creation not only embodies Mario’s spiritual journey but also reflects the challenges he overcame with strength and grace, especially after the loss of his beloved son Steve.
Mario dedicated his talents to numerous projects, including an invaluable contribution to the construction of Magazzino Italian Art. As Foreman, he played a pivotal role during the two years’ work that brought the museum to life. The concrete walls that frame Magazzino’s Main Building stand as a lasting tribute to his craftsmanship and dedication.
We at Magazzino Italian Art—the Founders, Architect, Directors, Team, and all who had the privilege of working alongside him—will forever remember him with gratitude and love. His artistry and spirit will continue to inspire generations to come.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family and to all those whose lives were touched by his extraordinary gifts. He will be deeply missed.
