It is with very heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Marisa Merz (1926-2019).

The sole woman associated with the Arte Povera movement, Merz was a trailblazer amongst her male colleagues. She was an integral contributor to Arte Povera, but her work and approach also significantly diverged from the movement and its spirit, making hers a vital practice to examine and one that helps us more completely tell the story of Arte Povera. Merz was fearless and never limited by space; instead, she worked with it to create limitless possibility, which took the form of large-scale installations and spatial interventions. She broke down the boundary between domestic habitat and artist’s studio, crafting a unique space of her own within which to exist and create. She also had the incredible capability of imbuing her entire artistic practice with poetry, distinction, and elegance no matter what materials she worked with or which spatial conditions she created within.

The team at Magazzino Italian Art extends our heartfelt and deepest condolences to her remaining family and friends. Her legacy will live on at Magazzino Italian Art, inspiring future generations to come.
